UNMASKeD

PHOTOGRAPHS BY Anne Brown

I want to see faces again, and not ones peering back at me from a computer screen. I crave expressions, especially smiles, and I want to travel again and meet interesting people and experience meaningful connections.

This collection of photographs was taken pre-COVID, during my travels around New England, from the tip of Cape Cod to northernmost Maine. I’m drawn to ordinary people that exude authenticity. There are usually only a few moments to capture the true essence of someone before they become self-conscious in front of the camera. Most find it unsettling to be “seen.”

I believe that our long-standing “timeout” caused by the pandemic has given us all much needed time for inner reflection and to work through who we are and what is most important to us.

When this pandemic is finally behind us, and it’s time for the masks to come off and for people to lay bare their transformed selves, I hope we all are able to look a bit more deeply and truly SEE one another.

About ME

I am an extremely curious person who is constantly observing and synthesizing the world around me. I find beauty everywhere. I has deep roots in the New England area and is happiest when exploring the unique places and people of this special part of the world.

In my work, I attempt to capture the true essence of a place or a person. I believe in simplicity, social justice, community and the ability for nature to teach and heal us and actively pursue projects that explore these themes. As a photographer and videographer, I am mostly self-taught but have taken intensive workshops throughout Boston, Maine and Arizona.

In addition to my love of photographing people, I enjoy spending time in nature and capturing rural landscapes and seascapes, especially throughout coastal Maine and Outer Cape Cod.

I moved to Rockland recently from the Boston area where I grew up.  I fell in love with the midcoast after spending time vacationing in the area, cruising in the Penobscot Bay and taking courses at Maine Media Workshop & College.
